Chaotic Kenya primaries a preview of March poll

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — Political parties are unveiling the names of those who won stormy primaries which observers say were flawed.

Many candidates claimed over the weekend that the process was unfair and that party bosses favored certain contestants over others, leading to pockets of violent protests in Kenya's third largest city, Kisumu.

Local media reported that an election official from the one of the political parties in Western Kenya died Sunday after succumbing to stab wounds from violence.

Political scientist Mutahi Ngunyi said Monday that the chaos in the primaries is not a good sign and indicates how the March 4 elections may play out.

More than 1,000 people died and 600,000 others were driven from their homes in violence sparked off by a disputed December 2007 presidential poll.
