U.S. Will Hold Talks With North Korea in Geneva Oct. 24-25

October 19, 2011

Oct. 19 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. will hold talks with North Korea next week amid continuing concerns about the country’s nuclear program, State Department spokesman Mark Toner announced.

The talks are set for Oct. 24 and 25 in Geneva, Toner said.

The U.S. also named a new envoy for North Korea, Glyn Davies, the current ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. Davies will replace Stephen Bosworth, who has served as envoy and is the dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.

The U.S. and North Korea have no formal diplomatic links and relations have been difficult.

“We’ve said before, we’re open to talks,” said Toner. “These are exploratory in nature.”
