GOP throws Obama's old deficit stands back at him

WASHINGTON (AP) — Some of the best Republican arguments against President Barack Obama's proposals to avoid a "fiscal cliff" come from the president himself.

They are comments Obama made long before his re-election. At the time he was stung by the Republicans' huge gains in the 2010 midterm elections.

Back then, Obama took some stands that differ from his current positions on raising tax rates, on adjusting Social Security and on other topics now dominating Washington as a Dec. 31 deadline nears.

Republicans remind him of those comments in the current deficit-reduction talks.

Democrats say it doesn't matter that some of the president's positions have changed. They say Obama's re-election wiped the old chalk board clean.
