More than 300,000 LIPA customers still lack power

NEW YORK (AP) — The Long Island Power Authority says more than 300,000 of its customers remain without power on Monday.

That's down from more than 1 million homes and businesses that lost power after Superstorm Sandy hit one week ago.

LIPA officials say they hope to restore power to 90 percent of the utility's customers on Long Island and the Rockaways by Wednesday,

LIPA says 11,000 workers are laboring around the clock to restore power to its customers.

The utility says that teams of LIPA and National Grid employees, fire marshals, police officers, electricians and plumbers are performing door-to-door inspections in the Rockaways to determine whether power can be restored.

LIPA says it is also working with Long Beach city officials to develop a plan to restore power there.
