Lonmin PLC may restructure after violent strike

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Lonmin Platinum says it must restructure its operations after a violent wildcat strike reduced its output and caused the deaths of more than 40 people.

The company said Thursday that it released a statement to unions saying it was contemplating restructuring. The statement to the unions said it was not known at this stage the number of employees who might be affected by any changes. Lonmin employs about 28,000 people in South Africa.

Lonmin says the events at Marikana in August increased operating costs while creating supply constraints.

Miners at Lonmin went on strike for nearly six weeks and violence during the strikes saw 46 people killed, including 34 miners who were killed by police. South Africa is holding a commission of inquiry to investigate the deaths.
