Uruguay Striker Suarez to Be Ready for World Cup After Surgery

May 22, 2014

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez underwent surgery on his left knee and will recover in time to participate in soccer’s World Cup in Brazil when it starts in three weeks.

The Liverpool forward injured his meniscus in training in Montevideo yesterday and had surgery following a scan, the Uruguay soccer federation said in an e-mail.

“He is not ruled out of the World Cup in Brazil,” the statement said. Suarez’s meniscus was re-sectioned and no other problems were found, it said.

Suarez was the top scorer in England’s Premier League this season with 31 goals as the Reds came close to winning the title for the first time in 24 years. They finished second, two points behind Manchester City.

His performances in 2013-14 earned the 27-year-old player-of-the-year awards from his fellow professionals and soccer writers. In previous seasons he’d received bans for racially abusing Patrice Evra of Manchester United (MANU:US) and biting Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea.

Uruguayan officials said Suarez originally suffered “a blunt trauma” to his knee during Liverpool’s final league May 11.

Suarez topped Bloomberg Sports’ index of performance rankings for 2013-14 in Europe’s top five leagues, ahead of players such as Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Diego Forlan and Edinson Cavani are among Uruguay’s other attacking options for the monthlong World Cup, which starts June 12. Uruguay faces group games against Costa Rica, England and Italy, with the top two teams advancing to the round of 16.

Uruguay has won the World Cup twice, including an upset victory over host Brazil in the deciding game of the 1950 tournament, the last time it was held there. Uruguay came fourth in the 2010 event in South Africa.
