Duke Developing 40 Megawatts of California Solar With Swinerton

March 24, 2014

Duke Energy Corp. (DUK:US), the largest U.S. utility owner, is developing a pair of 20-megawatt solar farms in central California with closely held Swinerton Inc.

Swinerton will design and build the Pumpjack and Wildwood projects near Bakersfield, and both are expected to start producing power this year, Charlotte, North Carolina-based Duke said today in a statement. Terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.

Duke has agreed to sell electricity from the projects to Edison International (EIX:US)’s Southern California Edison under a 20-year contract. The solar farms will power about 10,000 homes.

Once Pumpjack and Wildwood are operational, Duke will own and operate more than 65 megawatts of solar power capacity in California, according to the statement.
