Manchester United Faces Bayern Munich in Champions League

March 21, 2014

Manchester United (MANU:US), having one of its worst Premier League seasons, will play defending champion Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. Real Madrid was drawn against Borussia Dortmund.

In other matches, Chelsea plays Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona faces Atletico Madrid. The draw for the last eight took place at European ruling body UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland today.

Manchester United is seventh in the Premier League after losing nine of 29 games in David Moyes’s first season as coach. It takes on Bayern after rallying from a two-goal deficit in the opening match to eliminate Olympiacos 3-2.

In the 1999 Champions League final, United came back to beat Bayern Munich 2-1.

Real Madrid faces Borussia Dortmund a season after the record nine-time champion lost 4-3 over two matches to the Bundesliga team in the semifinals.

Four-time champion Barcelona faces Atletico Madrid, which is in the last eight for the first time since the 1996-97 season. Atletico is second in Spain’s La Liga, three points behind Real Madrid and one point ahead of Barcelona.

The two-match quarterfinals, with a home and away game, are scheduled for April 1-2 and April 8-9.
