The New York Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-2 to take sole possession of first place in the American League East ahead of the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox.
Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning last night to give the Yankees the Major League Baseball win, while the Orioles lost 8-5 to Minnesota Twins and the Red Sox fell 3-2 to Toronto Blue Jays.
Chris Nelson scored on a throwing error to first by third baseman Mike Moustakas to give the Yankees (22-13) a 1-0 lead in the third inning at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
Elliott Johnson tied the game in the third when Lorenzo Cain grounded out. Billy Butler gave the Royals a 2-1 lead in the fourth.
Wells hit his home run off James Shields (2-3) who allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five in eight innings for the Royals (18-15).
Andy Pettitte (4-2) gave up two runs on five hits and struck out seven in seven innings for the win. Mariano Rivera recorded his 14th save.
