Guinea Army Chief Among 11 People Killed in Plane Crash

February 11, 2013

Guinea’s army chief of staff, General Souleymane Diallo Kelefa, was among 11 people killed when a military plane crashed today in neighboring Liberia, according to an e-mailed statement from the presidency.

Six members of a delegation heading to Liberia and five crew members were killed in the crash at about 7:30 a.m. President Alpha Conde declared three days of national mourning, his office said.

Conde and the government give “their sincere condolences to the bereaved families, the national army and the people of Guinea,” according to the statement.

The officials were travelling to Liberia to mark that country’s Armed Forces Day, the Associated Press reported, citing Liberian Information Minister Lewis Brown.

Conde named General Namory Traore, deputy army chief of staff, as interim military head, according to separate statement form his office.
