Petra Kvitova defeated Australia’s Samantha Stosur in three sets today to give defending champion the Czech Republic an unbeatable 3-0 lead in a Fed Cup tennis quarterfinal. Italy, Russia and Slovakia also advanced.
Kvitova, the 2011 Wimbledon champion, won 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 in Ostrava in the top team competition in women’s tennis. The Czechs then won the “dead rubber” doubles match for a 4-0 scoreline.
Italy downed the U.S. 3-2 in Rimini, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci winning the decisive doubles 6-2, 6-2 against Liezel Huber and Varvara Lepchenko.
Elena Vesnina and Ekaterina Makarova gave Russia a 3-2 win over Japan with a 6-2, 6-2 doubles victory over Japan’s Ayumi Morita and Misaki Doi in Moscow.
Jana Cepelova and Daniela Hantuchova had wins over Bojana Jovanovski and Vesna Dolonc as visitors Slovakia built a winning 3-1 lead over Serbia in Nis.
