Two days ago, defending champion Juventus was held to a 1-1 tie by struggling Genoa and third-place Lazio was upset 1-0 by Chievo. Juventus has 49 points, Napoli 46 and Lazio 43.
Inter Milan is another 3 points back following a 2-2 draw against Torino in yesterday’s late match. Fifth-place AC Milan had a 1-0 win at 10-man Atalanta.
In Spain, Barcelona got back on track after suffering its first league defeat last weekend, with Messi scoring twice in each half and Pedro getting one in the second period in yesterday’s victory at home to Osasuna.
It stretches its lead to 11 points after a 3-0 defeat for second-place Atletico Madrid at Athletic Bilbao.
Cristiano Ronaldo got a hat-trick in Real Madrid’s 4-0 victory over Getafe. Real is 4 points further back.
Bayern Munich increased its advantage in Germany to 11 points, with goals from Mario Mandzukic and Thomas Mueller securing a 2-0 win at Stuttgart. The home team finished the match with 10 men after Martin Harnik was red-carded.
Second-place Bayer Leverkusen tied 0-0 against Freiburg two days ago. Borussia Dortmund won 3-0 against Nurnberg on Jan. 25 and is another point back.
Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon are tied on points atop France’s Ligue 1 following wins for both teams this weekend, as Marseille tied 2-2 at Rennes to slip three points back.
PSG beat Lille 1-0 yesterday while Lyon defeated Valenciennes 2-0 on Jan. 25.
In yesterday’s other games, Saint Etienne beat Bastia 3-0, and Bordeaux won 1-0 at Nice.
FC Twente failed to move back atop Dutch soccer’s Eredivisie after being held to a 0-0 tie yesterday at Feyenoord. It trails PSV Eindhoven, a 5-1 winner at Heracles on Jan. 26, by one point. Third-place Ajax lost 3-2 at Vitesse Arnhem.
