Renewables Generated 11.7% of U.K. Power in Third Quarter

Renewable energy sources generated 11.7 percent of U.K. power in the third quarter, an increase of 2.6 percentage points on the previous year, fueled by increased wind capacity, the Department of Energy and Climate Change said today in an e-mailed report.

Offshore wind power increased by 54 percent, while onshore wind power rose by 38 percent, the department said. Coal accounted for 35.4 percent of power, its highest thrid-quarter share in 14 years. Nuclear generated 22.3 percent of U.K. power, and gas provided 28.2 percent.
