Ted Ligety of the U.S. won the first men’s race of the World Cup ski season, finishing ahead of Italy’s Manfred Moelgg in today’s giant slalom in Soelden, Austria.

Ligety had a time of 2 minutes, 36.02 seconds with Moelgg’s combined two-run time 2.75 seconds slower. Austria’s Marcel Hirscher, defending overall and giant slalom title holder, was third.

France’s Thomas Fanara, fastest on the first run, was fourth.

The 28-year-old Ligety now has 12 World Cup victories, all in giant slalom. That includes a win in Soelden last season.
