Giggs Joins Richards, Bellamy on British Olympic Soccer Squad

July 02, 2012

Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley and Ryan Giggs will join Liverpool’s Craig Bellamy and Manchester City’s Micah Richards on Britain’s Olympic soccer team.

Giggs, Bellamy and Richards are the squad’s three players over 23-years-old, with the rest of the players being younger, according to an e-mailed statement from local Olympic organizers. Cleverley and Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey will help form the midfield.

Britain hasn’t fielded a team with players recruited from all the home nations -- England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland -- for men’s soccer since the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, where the team finished third in its group.

The squad will play its first match against Senegal at United’s Old Trafford on July 26th.
