Japan Has One Reactor With 3% of Total Capacity Online

July 01, 2012

Japan has one of its 50 reactors operating with a capacity of 1,180 megawatts, or 3 percent of the total, according to data compiled by Bloomberg News.

Kansai Electric Power Co. (9503) restarted the No. 3 reactor at its Ohi nuclear power plant in western Japan’s Fukui prefecture yesterday, ending a two-month period for the country without an operating reactor.

The No. 3 unit reached so-called criticality at 6 a.m. today after the operation was resumed at 9 p.m. yesterday. The plant is scheduled to generate electricity as early as July 4. The utility plans to restart the 1,180-megawatt No. 4 reactor at the plant as early as July 17.

The following table shows the status of the 50 reactors with capacity of 46,148 megawatts operated by Japanese power companies. Capacity figures are in megawatts.
