The Taiex Index retreated 0.8 percent to 7,279.05, the biggest drop since June 8.
Compal Communications Inc. (8078) (8078 TT) dropped 4.5 percent to NT$33.30, the lowest close since June 4. The handset maker may see orders decline in the second half as sales of Nokia Inc.’s Windows phone, Lumia 610, have been worse than expected, according to a Daiwa Capital Markets report today.
Quanta Computer Inc. (2382) (2382 TT), the world’s largest laptop maker, slid 3.5 percent to NT$78.10, the biggest retreat since May 23. Commercial Times reported that Quanta may have lost part of an order for Apple Inc’s MacBook computers to Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Quanta said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange after market hours that the report is “not complying with the facts” and that it won’t comment on specific customers or orders.
United Microelectronics Corp. (2303) (2303 TT) advanced 1.2 percent to NT$12.85, the highest close since May 31. The world’s second-largest custom maker of chips will go ex-dividend on July 9, the company said in a statement to the Taiwan Stock Exchange yesterday.
