Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc. (8306), Japan’s biggest bank, hired Sean Malone from Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc (RBS) to head European loan syndication, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

Malone replaces Francesco Carobbi, who left the Tokyo-based bank in February, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the hiring hasn’t been publicly announced. Malone, based in London, will start on Oct. 1 at the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. unit, reporting to Hiroaki Fujisue, a general manager at the Japanese bank, said the people.

Dave Rome, a London-based managing director who has worked with Malone for seven years, will become acting head of loan origination for Europe, Middle East and Africa at RBS, said the people.

Rebecca Nelson, a spokeswoman for RBS, confirmed Malone’s departure. She declined to comment further.

Malone joined Edinburgh-based RBS in 2005 from Deutsche Bank AG.

Paul Cardoen, deputy general manager in London for Mitsubishi UFJ, confirmed Malone’s appointment.
