Democrat Ron Barber, a former aide to former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords, defeated Republican Jesse Kelly in a special election to replace the Arizona Democrat who was shot in the head last year, according to the Associated Press.
Barber was leading, 53 percent to 45 percent, with 66 percent of precincts counted in the special election, AP said.
Barber will fill out Giffords’ term representing a Southeast Arizona district that includes part of Tucson. The party primary for a full two-year term is Aug. 28, with the general election Nov. 6
