South Africa’s measures to control an outbreak of African Horse Sickness have been recognized worldwide by the World Organization for Animal Health, known as the OIE, easing contraints on the country’s horse export industry.
South Africa’s Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries announced the recognitionin an e-mailed statement today. the recognition will ease the export of horses.
“This is a significant breakthrough for South Africa, whose horse export industry has been hamstrung by the past rules, which failed to properly address the real risk of exporting the AHS virus,” Peter Gibson, the chief executive officer of Racing South Africa, said in the statement.
