The University of Virginia beat Princeton University 6-5 in a first-round contest in the men’s national college lacrosse tournament as Colin Briggs and Chris Bocklet scored two goals apiece.

Steele Stanwick and Bobby Hill added goals for the host Cavaliers in yesterday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association game at Klockner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia. Fifth-seeded Virginia (12-3) advances to play No. 4 Notre Dame, which won 13-7 against Yale University.

Jeff Froccaro and Tom Schreiber had two goals each for Princeton (11-5), who also got a goal from Forest Sonnenfeldt.

Second-seeded Johns Hopkins University moved into the second round with a 19-9 win against Stony Brook in Baltimore. Brandon Benn had five goals for Johns Hopkins (12-3), which will next play the University of Maryland.

The Terrapins beat seventh-seeded Lehigh University 10-9 with four fourth-quarter goals, including the winner by Joe Cummings with six seconds left in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Jim Marlatt had three goals and two assists to lead host Notre Dame to its win against Yale.

Top seed Loyola of Maryland and No. 3 Duke won their first- round games two days ago, when No. 6 Massachusetts was upset by Colgate and No. 8 North Carolina was knocked off by Denver. Loyola will face Denver, while Duke next meets Colgate.
