Russia Equity Movers: Mechel, Novatek, Sberbank, Rostelecom

The 30-stock Micex Index rose 1.8 percent to 1,408.31 by the close in Moscow, snapping six days of declines.

The following are among the most active stocks in the Russian market today. Stock symbols are in parenthesis.

OAO Mechel (MTLR) increased 5.4 percent to 229.20 rubles, the biggest gain since Jan. 26. Russia’s largest producer of coal for steelmakers said profit in the fourth quarter surged almost eightfold as the ruble strengthened, leading to a foreign exchange gain.

OAO Novatek (NVTK RX) added 5.5 percent to 333.52 rubles, the strongest advance since July 21. Alfa Bank forecast 11 percent sales growth in the first quarter from a year earlier for Russia’s second-largest natural-gas producer.

OAO Rostelecom (RTKM RX), Russia’s long-distance phone operator, gained 2.2 percent to 127.86 rubles. Vedomosti reported President Vladimir Putin ordered the completion of its merger with OAO Svyazinvest, the national telecommunications holding.

OAO Sberbank (SBER RX) climbed 2.7 percent to 91.74 rubles. Russia’s biggest lender said it increased profit by about 14 percent in the first four months of the year.

United Co. Rusal (RUALR RX) fell 1.3 percent to 196.98 rubles, the lowest level since Jan. 10. Renaissance Capital forecast a 5 percent decline in first-quarter margins from the previous three-month period at the world’s largest aluminum producer.
