Areva, Lufthansa, Novartis, UBS: European Equity Preview

The following companies’ shares may have unusual moves in European (SXXP) trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses.

The Stoxx Europe 600 Index fell 0.4 percent to 257.39. The Stoxx 50 Index (SX5P) decreased 0.4 percent to 2,406.08. The Euro Stoxx 50 Index (SX5E), a benchmark measure for nations using the euro, declined 0.7 percent to 2,290.31.

Areva SA (AREVA) : The largest nuclear reactor maker has started a process to sell its nuclear radiation measurement unit Canberra, three people with knowledge of the plans said. The shares fell 2.8 percent to 12.85 euros.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHA) : Europe’s second-biggest airline said its first-quarter loss widened as European economies slowed and the cost of fuel and restructuring measures weighed on earnings. The shares gained 0.8 percent to 9.91 euros.

Eni SpA (ENI) : Italy’s largest oil company said it resumed operations at its Venice refinery following a six-month halt. The shares dropped 0.7 percent to 16.65 euros.

Novartis AG (NOVN) : Europe’s largest drugmaker said it will purchase closely held Fougera Pharmaceuticals for $1.5 billion in a deal to gain generic skin medications. Fougera, based in Melville, New York, had sales of about $429 million in 2011. Novartis shares fell 0.7 percent to 49.72 Swiss francs.

UBS AG (UBSN) : Switzerland’s biggest bank was raised to hold from sell at Deutsche Bank AG. The shares increased 3.7 percent to 11.75 Swiss francs.
