Some 15 percent of Irish homes were vacant in 2011, the country’s statistics office said today, citing census data.

The population rose by 8.2 percent to just under 4.6 million people since 2006, when the last census was taken, while the number of foreign nationals living in the state increased by 30 percent to 544,357 people during that period, the Cork-based statistics office said in a statement today.
