Romanians protested yesterday against plans by Chevron Corp. (CVX) to explore for shale gas by hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” Mediafax reported.
About 5,000 people took to the streets in Barlad, northeast Romania, after the company said it plans to begin exploration in the area this year, the news service reported.
Constantin Constantinescu, Barlad’s mayor, said people are worried about environmental damage that may be caused by fracking, which uses a mixture of water, sand and chemicals to open fissures in shale rocks to release gas and oil, Mediafax reported.
