Marist Upsets Georgia in Women’s NCAA Tournament; Baylor Rolls

Marist College beat fourth-seeded University of Georgia 76-70 in the first round of the National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball tournament.

Corielle Yarde scored 21 points yesterday for Poughkeepsie, New York-based Marist (26-7), which advances to play St. Bonaventure in the second round.

Baylor University continued its unbeaten season with an 81-40 rout of the University of California-Santa Barbara, while fellow regional No. 1 seed Notre Dame opened its tournament run with a 74-43 victory over Liberty.

Second-seeded Duke University topped Samford 82-47 in its first-round game, while No. 3 seed St. John’s University was a 69-67 winner against Creighton. The University of Delaware, another No. 3 regional seed, beat the University of Arkansas Little Rock 73-42.

Georgetown, California, Florida, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Penn State, Oklahoma, Louisiana State and Kansas also posted first-round victories yesterday.
