Thailand Stocks: Big C, Khon Kaen, Khonburi, PTT Exploration

Shares of the following companies had unusual moves in Thailand trading. Stock symbols are in parentheses and prices are as of the close in Bangkok.

The SET Index (SET) rose 0.6 percent to 1,171.34, the highest close since July 1996.

Sugar producers: Khon Kaen Sugar Industry Pcl (KSL) gained 2.2 percent to 14.2 baht, the highest close since March 2. Khonburi Sugar Pcl (KBS) (KBS TB) increased 1.8 percent to 11.1 baht, the largest increase since Feb. 17.

Raw-sugar futures for May delivery climbed 1.3 percent to 24.44 cents a pound on ICE Futures U.S. in New York yesterday.

Big C Supercenter Pcl (BIGC) , the nation’s second- biggest hypermarket operator, jumped 10 percent to 175 baht, a record close. Investors are betting the company may revive a rights issue soon, Sureeporn Teewasuwet, an analyst at Finansia Syrus Pcl Securities, said by phone today. The company is still “committed” to a plan to increase capital for business expansion, Kudatara Nagaviroj, a spokesman, said by phone today. The hypermarket operator has no “specific timeframe” for any share sale, he said.

PTT Exploration & Production Pcl (PTTEP) , Thailand’s only publicly traded oil explorer, dropped 1.4 percent to 173 baht, the lowest close since Jan. 25. Crude oil yesterday fell 1.2 percent to $105.43 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the lowest close since March 6.
