Five mobile-phone companies in Burundi agreed to build a fiber-optic network in the East African nation, Renouveau reported, citing Telecommunications Minister Concilie Nibigira.
The companies include Leo Burundi, a unit of Orascom Telecom Holding SAE (ORTE), state-owned Onatel, Econet Wireless Holdings’ Burundian unit, along with Centre Burundais de l’Internet and Africell, the Bujumbura-based newspaper said.
The World Bank will provide a $10.5 million grant to help fund the project, while the phone companies will provide the remaining $7.5 million needed to complete it, the newspaper said.
