Vale SA (VALE3) and Rio Tinto Plc (RIO) are among the recipients of 20 coal prospecting licences issued by Mozambique for the Maniamba basin in northwestern Niassa province, National Mines Director Eduardo Alexandre said.
The Maniamba basin covers 4,000 square kilometers and studies carried out so far have covered 870 square kilometers, Alexandre said in a telephone interview today from the capital, Maputo.
The government is working on a coal transportation system connecting the province, he said without giving further details.
