First Wind Begins Construction on Hawaii’s Largest Wind Project

February 27, 2012

Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) -- First Wind Holdings LLC, a closely held renewable-energy developer, began construction on a wind farm that it says will be the largest in Hawaii.

The 69-megawatt Kawailoa wind farm on the north shore of Oahu will use 30 Siemens AG turbines to meet as much as 5 percent of the island’s annual energy needs, Boston-based First Wind said today in a statement. Hawaiian Electric Co. in December received approval from state regulators to buy the project’s electricity.
