Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- China has started 13 research and development projects to improve emergency response mechanisms for nuclear power plants in case of “extreme disasters,” the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement from the National Energy Administration.
The projects are aimed at improving safety-related technology used in China’s nuclear power plants and will be carried out by China National Nuclear Corp., China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Corp. and the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology in cooperation with Tsinghua University, Xinhua said. The projects will be completed around 2013, it said.
The research results will be used to lower the core damage frequencies and large early release frequencies of reactors, Xinhua said, citing the administration.
