Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Inc. named former CA Inc. Chief Executive Officer John Swainson president of a new software group that will help offer more complete information-technology services to customers.
Swainson, most recently a senior adviser to private equity firm Silver Lake Management LLC, will report to CEO Michael Dell, Round Rock, Texas-based Dell said in a statement today. The appointment of Swainson, who led CA from 2005 through 2009, is effective March 5.
Dell is seeking to transform from a low-cost personal- computer maker into a supplier of computing devices, data-center equipment, software and technology services. The company said the new software group will bolster its ability to offer clients a broader array of products and services.
Dell gained 2 percent to $17.74 at 10:53 a.m. New York time. The shares rose 8 percent last year.
