Jan. 26 (Bloomberg) -- Russia’s three biggest cell phone operators, OAO Mobile TeleSystems, VimpelCom Ltd. and OAO MegaFon, have agreed to allow customers to make cross payments on restaurant and utilities bills and goods purchases.
In a bid to boost the number of people that pay bills using their mobile phones, the agreement will allow a customer with a MegaFon subscription, for example, to make payments to a retailer with an agreement with Mobile TeleSystems, according to a statement e-mailed by the companies today.
Russian mobile phone subscribers paid 20 billion rubles ($660 million) in goods and services bills using their mobile accounts in 2011, the Interfax news agency reported yesterday, citing data by Moscow’s Advanced Communications & Media. That was five-fold more than in 2010, Interfax said, citing the data.
