Jan. 20 (Bloomberg) -- AppNexus Inc., the online advertising company backed by Microsoft Corp., took a step closer to a possible initial public offering by appointing Bruce Cooperman as chief financial officer.

Cooperman was previously CFO of the International Securities Exchange LLC and his experience at other financial exchanges suits him well for a his new role at AppNexus, which helps companies bid on advertising exchanges and build their own exchanges, the company said yesterday in a statement.

AppNexus Chief Executive Officer Brian O’Kelly said last year that the company may go public in late 2012. New York-based AppNexus has raised funding from companies, including Microsoft.
