Jan. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Birla Sun Life Asset Management Co., the Indian venture of Canada’s third-largest insurer, has hired Mihir Vora, head of South Asian equities at Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, an official at the Indian company said.

Vora, who has worked at the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority since March 2009, will manage 35 billion rupees ($686 million) in offshore equities for the Indian asset manager, the official said declining to be identified before a public announcement.

Vora replaces Ajay Argal, who quit Birla Sun Life to join Baring Asset Management Asia Ltd. Argal joined Baring in Hong Kong in November, according to a statement from the company last year. Vora didn’t respond to an e-mail seeking comment and couldn’t be reached on his mobile phone.

Saman Khan, a spokeswoman for Birla Sun Life, a venture between Indian billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla’s Aditya Birla Group and Sun Life Financial Inc., said she couldn’t immediately comment on the hire.
