Hungary Categorically Denies All Reports on Deposit Seizure

January 06, 2012

Jan. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Hungary’s government “categorically denies” all “false” reports on the government potentially seizing households’ bank deposits, government spokesman Andras Giro-Szasz said.

The state offers full guarantees for savings of up to 100,000 euros, which is a European Union regulation, Giro-Szasz told reporters in Budapest today.

“Deposits are safe and guaranteed,” Giro-Szasz said, adding that all media reports suggesting the government has plans to touch deposits “are entirely unfounded.”
