Commerzbank Declines to Comment on Report of Talks on State Aid

December 12, 2011

Dec. 12 (Bloomberg) -- Commerzbank AG, Germany’s second- biggest bank, declined to comment on a report by Reuters that the lender is holding talks with the German government on state aid, citing only comments last week that it aims to avoid public funds.

Commerzbank spokesman Armin Guhl declined to comment on “market speculation” and referred to Chief Financial Officer Eric Strutz’s comments on Dec. 8, when he said “we stand by our intention not to make use of additional public funds.” Reuters reported earlier today that the lender is holding “intensive talks” on government aid and aims for a basic agreement before Christmas, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter.
