Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Newmont Mining Corp., the largest U.S. gold producer, said it halted construction work at a gold deposit in Peru for a second day during a regional protest.
The stoppage at the company’s $4.8 billion Minas Conga project seeks “to avoid conflict with protesters,” opposed to the mine, Newmont spokesman Omar Jabara said today in e-mailed comments. The company is seeking talks with the government and protesters, he said.
