Hockey Commentator Cherry Declines Military College Degree

November 06, 2011

(Updates with college comment in second paragraph.)

Nov. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Hockey commentator Don Cherry declined an honorary degree from the Royal Military College of Canada.

“We received with regret, but with complete understanding, Mr. Don Cherry’s personal decision not to participate in the forthcoming convocation at the Royal Military College of Canada,” Joel Sokolsky, principal of the Kingston, Ontario, college, said in a statement. The statement didn’t indicate Cherry’s reason for declining the degree.

Cherry, the star of the Coach’s Corner segments on Canadian Broadcasting Corp.’s “Hockey Night in Canada” broadcasts, was one of three people who were to receive honorary degrees Nov. 17.

“It would have been our honor and privilege for Mr. Cherry to have received an honorary degree from the university, in recognition of his outstanding support for our Canadian Forces personnel and for his incredible charitable work,” Sokolsky said in the statement.
