Russian Equity Movers: Norilsk Nickel, Gazprom, Severstal

Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- The 30-stock Micex Index added 2.6 percent to 1,499.79 by 6:45 p.m. close of trading in Moscow, its strongest close since Sept. 21. The dollar-denominated RTS Index added 2 percent to 1,530.11.

The following are among the most active stocks in the Russian market today. Stock symbols are in parentheses:

OAO Gazprom (GAZP RX), Russia’s gas export monopoly, surged 5.5 percent to 177.44 rubles, its highest level since Aug. 31. The company may pay more than 180 billion rubles ($5.9 billion) in dividends, doubling last year’s record, Vedomosti reported today.

OAO GMK Norilsk Nickel (GMKN RX), the world’s largest producer of the metal, fell for a second day, declining 1.2 percent, the biggest drop on the Micex today, to 6,232 rubles. The company’s weighting in the MSCI Russia Index may drop about 1 percentage point to 4.49 percent after a share buyback, VTB Capital analysts said today in a research note.

OAO Severstal (CHMF RX), Russia’s second-biggest steel producer, jumped 4.2 percent to 432.80 rubles, its best level since Sept. 15. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said economic policy will be fine-tuned as needed and the industry ministry said it is studying “stimulative policies” for smaller companies, boosting demand for commodities.
