Mersch Says Only ECB Council Can Decide on Bond Program

October 26, 2011

Oct. 26 (Bloomberg) -- European Central Bank Governing Council member Yves Mersch said only the 23-member council can make decisions on the bank’s bond-purchase program.

Asked today outside Florence, Italy, about incoming ECB president Mario Draghi’s remark that the central bank would continue to support markets with its bond purchases for now, Mersch told reporters: “The next Governing Council meeting is taking place in early November and that’s the only body that can take decisions in this field.”
