U.S. Stocks Extend Losses as Merkel Cancels Speech on Bailout

Oct. 20 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks extended losses as German Chancellor Angela Merkel canceled a speech to parliament on the European bailout fund because of disagreements on the role of the region’s central bank, fueling concern a split between leaders was widening.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 0.8 percent to 1,200.47 at 11:59 a.m. in New York.
