Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks retreated, sending the FTSE 100 Index down 0.6 percent to 5,435.11 at 2:54 p.m. in London. The gauge earlier rallied as much as 1.4 percent.
Stocks erased gains after a German government spokesman said that euro-area leaders will not provide a quick ending to the debt crisis at their next meeting.
Antofagasta Plc and Kazakhmys Plc dropped more than 3 percent in London trading.
