Levante Splits Barcelona, Real Atop La Liga; Lazio Beats Roma

Oct. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Levante is tied with defending champion Barcelona atop Spain’s Primera Liga after a 3-0 win against Malaga, while Serie A leader Juventus played out one of five scoreless games in Italy as Lazio beat city rival Roma.

Jose Barkero, Juanlu and Arouna Kone scored yesterday for Levante, which finished 14th in the division last season. Barcelona beat Racing Santander 3-0 two days ago. Real Madrid, a 4-1 winner against Real Betis, remains a point behind the top two, who have 17 points from seven matches.

Juventus tied 0-0 at Chievo and stays top on goals scored in Italy. Second-place Udinese, which also has 12 points from six games, had a scoreless draw at Atalanta. Only three of the 14 teams in action yesterday managed to score a goal.

Cagliari drew 0-0 against Siena and sits one point behind. Lazio joined Cagliari on 11 points after beating Roma 2-1 in last night’s Rome derby after Miroslav Klose scored the winning goal in the third minute of stoppage time.

Inter Milan crashed to a 2-1 defeat at Catania two days ago, while defending champion AC Milan beat Palermo 3-0.

Hamburg got its second win of the season in Germany’s Bundesliga, 2-1 at Freiburg, though remains last in the 18-team standings.

Bayern Munich stretched its lead to five points two days ago after a 4-0 win against Hertha Berlin, including two goals from Mario Gomez. Second-place Borussia Moenchengladbach tied 2- 2 against Bayer Leverkusen.

A Kevin Gameiro hat trick lifted Paris Saint-Germain to a 3-1 win at Ajaccio yesterday and a three-point lead in France. PSG has 23 points, with Montpellier and Lyon on 20 points. Rennes beat Lorient 2-0 in the late game.

In the Netherlands, AZ Alkmaar leads the Eredivisie by two points from PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente after a 2-2 draw at Ajax two days ago, while its two closest challengers posted wins. Feyenoord and Vitesse are three points further back following wins yesterday, 4-0 against VVV Venlo and 1-0 at NEC Nijmegen respectively.
