June 12, 2011

June 12 (Bloomberg) -- South Africa’s National Union of Mineworkers said it begin wage talks with the Chamber of Mines and will seek a wage increase of 14 percent.

“We are hopeful that the Chamber of Mines will accede to our reasonable demands and that there will be no room for confrontation,” NUM General Secretary Frans Baleni said in an e-mailed statement today.

The Chamber of Mines represents gold companies including Gold Fields Ltd., Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd, and AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. and collieries such as Anglocoal and Kangra, the NUM said.
