Turkey Parliament Approves New Powers, Ministries, Anatolia Says
April 06, 2011, 1:53 AM EDTBy Steve Bryant
April 6 (Bloomberg) -- Turkey’s parliament approved legislation giving the government power to rule by decree for six months, state news agency Anatolia reported.
The measure approved in Ankara gives the Cabinet the power to issue decisions with the force of law for six months, the agency said. Turkey is due to hold general elections on June 12.
The legislation also gives the government authority to change the number of ministerial posts in the Cabinet and allows for the creation of separate economy, trade, sport, and social affairs ministries, Anatolia said. The new ministries would have more power over their own budgets than in the present system, in which their spending is tied to the prime ministers office.
