RRI Energy Stops Output at Mandalay Power Unit in California

September 08, 2009

RRI Energy Inc., a Houston-based electricity producer, stopped output at a southern California power plant unit.

The company’s Mandalay Generating Station’s 215.3-megawatt Unit 2 was offline in an unplanned shutdown as of 3:15 p.m. local time today, the California Independent System Operator said in a report.

The unit was operating at 70 percent capacity yesterday, having idled 65.3 megawatts for unplanned reasons, a previous report showed.

The power station, which burns natural gas, is located in Oxnard, California. It has three generating units with a total capacity of 560 megawatts, according to the company’s Web site.

One megawatt can power about 800 typical U.S. homes.
