Benjamin Bollin, an analyst at FTN Midwest Securities in Boston, comments on his outlook for Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM), which is scheduled to release its quarterly financial results today. Bollin, who has a ``buy'' rating on the company, spoke in an interview.
Waterloo, Ontario-based Research In Motion faces the prospect of a court order barring BlackBerry service in the U.S. because a jury found that the company infringed patents owned by NTP Inc.
On his outlook for the patent conflict:
``There are a few outcomes that are possible. Ultimately they could pay particular amount to resolve this conflict.''
``My estimate is a settlement between $700 million and $1 billion.''
On the company's growth prospect, stock price:
``I think there are a lot of catalysts out there that could take the stock higher.''
``I don't think'' the patent dispute ``is something that irreparably harms them. You are seeing good demand, and upon the resolution of the litigation I would look for the customers to come back to the table. Research in Motion has the most proven solution, and they also have the largest installed base.''
