Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Professor of economics and management, interim dean of the Sloan School of Management
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
Schmalensee was a member of the President's Council of Economic Advisers during the Bush Administration. He has represented Microsoft before antitrust authorities since the early 1990s. He also has advised Visa International Corp. in private antitrust suits and in government investigations of the credit-card company. Both Microsoft and Visa operate in industries known for their "network effects," an economics theory where a product becomes more valuable when its network of users expands.
EXPECTED TO TESTIFY:
Schmalensee will likely testify about rapid innovation and declining prices in the software industry, the benefits of integrating new features into Microsoft's Windows operating system, and the absence of harm to competitors from Microsoft's browser-distribution agreements.
