Profiles

Daniel Rosen

Microsoft Corp.
General manager, new technology, Microsoft Research

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
Rosen sizes up Microsoft's future technology needs and makes recommendations for how they should be met. Earlier -- during the time period crucial to his testimony -- he was a general manager of Microsoft Network in charge of the transaction and services businesses. That online service was launched in conjunction with Windows 95. Rosen previously was a vice-president at AT&T who helped launch the telecom giant's consumer-oriented Internet services.

EXPECTED TO TESTIFY:
Rosen was one Microsoft's representatives at a crucial June, 1995, meeting at Netscape Communications Corp. The government claims that Microsoft execs offered to illegally divide up the browser market with Netscape -- urging Netscape not to produce a browser for the upcoming Windows 95 operating system upgrade. Rosen is expected to deny that and argue that Microsoft was actually offering technology assistance to help Netscape produce such a browser. Look for some fireworks here. The government has Microsoft E-mails and a deposition with Rosen that it says proves its contention.
